AUDITION MATERIAL

Each student will need to prepare one monologue and one song for their audition.

Audition Tips:

  • Not all parts are appropriate for every actor! There are a lot of great parts, just try to figure out which is the best fit for you! Some roles have lots of dancing, others have lines only with no solos. There’s something for everyone!

  • When choosing your song and monologue, you should consider which character you are auditioning for. For songs, make sure you choose something in your vocal range that suits the character you're auditioning for. If you're going for a smaller role with no solos, just choose something you're comfortable with that suits your voice best. The material you choose should reflect your ability to play the character you are auditioning for.

  • Memorization of your song and monologue is not required.

  • Recite your monologue and sing with clear diction. All words need to be pronounced clearly so the audience can understand you.

  • Project your voice. Speak and sing loud enough so the back row can hear you (even if no one is sitting there).

  • Sing and speak with confidence. If you forget a lyric or a line, just keep going!

  • Keep your head up and look out into the audience.

  • Show emotion in your face and in your voice. Remember to exaggerate and make all emotions bigger than you think they need to be.

  • Keep your feet planted and your hands by your side.  Any movements you make should be an acting decision.

  • Speak slowly. Do not rush through your lines.

  • Sing in your own style.

  • Make sure you tell a story with your song. Acting while you're singing can be just as important as when reading lines from the script.

  • If you're nervous when you get on stage (and everyone is!), take your time, take a deep breath and start when you're ready. If you're unsure of your starting note, just ask for it.
